Project challenges

Organising the international educational competition “Icebreaker of Knowledge”, with an open selection process for school pupils from 20 countries with different levels of access to educational resources and distinct educational contexts.

Key challenges:

  • ensuring equal and transparent access for school pupils from different countries;

  • developing a common set of rules and documents that reflects requirements across multiple jurisdictions;

  • sustaining interest in the competition across the participating countries;

  • combining educational objectives with the promotion of Russian scientific and technological achievements;

  • organising safe travel and an in-person awards programme in Russia for the winners.

Implementation

  • The dedicated goarctic.energy portal provided a single digital platform for registering participants, publishing tasks and running every stage of the competition.

  • We produced and distributed promotional videos and graphics that built awareness of the competition and supported campaigns across 20 countries.

  • We promoted the project through partner organisations, educational institutions and media platforms across the participating countries.

  • We created a unique bank of competition materials, including online quiz questions and webinars recorded in Russian and English.

  • We maintained continuous communication with participants and their legal representatives through mailings, consultations and support at every stage of the competition.

  • We assembled a qualified judging panel to ensure objective assessment of the results.

  • We arranged travel and a comprehensive cultural and educational programme in Murmansk and Moscow for 20 winners and their legal representatives.

  • We coordinated the winners’ onward journey to join the North Pole expedition aboard a nuclear-powered icebreaker.

Results

  • The advertising campaign reached millions, bringing the project’s total audience to 10 million.

  • More than 4,000 participants from 20 countries registered for the competition, confirming strong interest among school pupils in Russian educational initiatives focused on peaceful nuclear technology.

  • Twenty winners joined an educational expedition to the North Pole aboard a nuclear-powered icebreaker, strengthening Russia’s image as a country that invests in young people’s intellectual development and promotes international educational projects focused on the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

  • Participants’ subsequent media accounts of the competition, their time in Russia and their experience of Russian educational and technological initiatives helped build trust in Russia and its nuclear technology and foster more positive attitudes towards both among participants and wider audiences.
